Laura Pettifer Memorial Triathlon

Laura was a well loved member of the Mackay community and a talented Mackay triathlete – she had a great passion for her sport and life in general and always took the time to support and encourage the achievements of others.  Whilst she had great success in her time with the Triathlon Club and at Mackay Road runners, Laura was always humble and never boastful. She loved the ‘hard stuff’’- in fact she was training for her first Ironman Triathlon event when she had her tragic accident at the age of 26.  Her death touched all of us deeply.

Every year the Mackay Triathlon Club holds the Laura Pettifer Memorial Triathlon to celebrate the life and spirit of Laura.  Laura’s parents often make the trip from NSW to attend the event and present the Laura Pettifer trophy to the winner of the female category following the event.  They also contribute to holding the ‘King and Queen of the Mountain’ running race up the Eungella Range each year.

During the event, this triathlon asks each competitor for just that little bit extra, by incorporating a hill into the course as a reminder of the spirit and challenges that Laura loved. As the event has grown over the last few years the event is no longer just a Sprint Distance (750/20/5) but includes an Enticer Distance (350/10/2.5) and Mini Kids Aquathon (100m swim and 500m run).
